Del uso de las partes, de Claudio Galeno (130-200), traducida ahora por primera vez al español, es el primer tratado completo de anatomía funcional en la historia de la medicina y fue la única obra de referencia en anatomía hasta el Renacimiento. Influyó decisivamente en médicos como Arnau de Vilanova, Avicena, Vesalio o Miguel Servet. No sólo describe las partes del cuerpo humano sino que investiga además su funcionamiento. Galeno, «padre de la fisiología experimental», fue partidario de las disecciones para estudiar aquellas partes del cuerpo no accesibles a los ojos. Practicó también vivisecciones para explorar el funcionamiento del corazón o del pulmón. Causaron sensación sus experimentos con el cerebro, con la médula espinal, con ciertos nervios, muy especialmente con el recurrente y con los músculos internos de la laringe. Destaca su descripción de huesos y músculos. Defendió la interdependencia entre la mano y la función cerebral en la dinámica del desarrollo del ser humano. Formula por primera vez desde un punto de vista no teísta lo que desde sir William Paley se iba a llamar «diseño inteligente». Piensa que desde los orígenes la estructura de cada parte del cuerpo es la mejor de las posibles. Para Galeno el hombre es la suprema creación de la naturaleza. Afirma que así como Policleto desveló el canon y belleza del cuerpo externo, al médico le cumple desvelar la armonía y la perfección del cuerpo interno. Mediante el estudio de las partes del cuerpo, de sus relaciones y estructura, se manifiesta la excelencia de la estructura y el buen funcionamiento de las partes del cuerpo y en eso, según Galeno, consiste la salud y la belleza verdadera. Nada más sagrado, dice, que desvelar ese canon y darlo a conocer, por eso considera esta obra de anatomía fisiológica un «discurso sagrado», un himno de alabanza a la naturaleza.
